UNIT 37 - Presentation roles and techiques

News presenter

The role of a news reporter requires them to address the audience (depending on the topic) in a modest and formal way. This is so they seem serious and are trusted with what they say and are delivering, as the main job of a news reporter is to deliver the news effectively. As the news covers mostly everything that is going on in the world from government debates to local news and even tragic events, news reporters must make sure that they are addressing the situation appropriately. For example on BBC London news the verbal techniques that would be used would ensure that the language is informative, and at a set pace so the viewers understand and receive information clearly. It is vital that the news reporter doesn't go too slow or too fast when delivering as either one can disengage audiences from watching. In terms of visual techniques the news reporters attire would be formally presentable so for instance male news reporters would most likely be wearing a suit with a tie and a female news reporter could be wearing a formal dress or a blazer and a top unbuttoned shirt. It is important that the news reporters are in formal clothes so that the audience take them seriously and it also makes them seem more reliable as they are dressed professionally. Another thing to take into consideration when it comes to visual techniques is hand gestures, the news reporter in the studio would hardly be using a lot of hand gestures whilst talking and delivering the news, this is so that the audience don't get distracted by the motion and are more focused on whats being said. Also with face expressions most of the time news reporters keep to a straight face, however this can be changed again to suit the topic. A commonly known news presenter for BBC news would be Riz Lateef. in a news report she would make sure she is dressed appropriately and formally and that her words are being heard clearly with tone to suit the specific topic.

Continuity announcer

The role of a continuity announcer would be to inform the audience on what is coming up next, they are a voiceover usually with the visual of the channels logo and the name of the programme which would be coming up next/. The verbal techniques that could be used has a wide variety as it depends on what channel it is. So for example on the channel E4 the continuity announcer could be a lot more humorous compared to a channel like BBC. They usually make remarks on shows and usually quote a saying from it. The announcer would make sure he says what is coming up next in a up bet and tempo sort of tone as it would be "hyping" up the show that is coming up so viewers would be more likely to watch it, if they were to announce the next show in a dull and mellow voice then it wouldn't seem as appealing to the viewers and they'd most likely change the channel, therefore it is vital that the announcer is informative as well as engaging. As the format of this role is a voice over there are no visual techniques used.

Broadcast Journalist

The role of a broadcast journalist is to go to certain places on the "field" and report back to the studio so that audiences can get more information in more depth with a rough visual idea. For this role to be successful then the the reporter would have to have certain flexibility in terms of how they address an audience through verbal and visual techniques. The field reporter would also like the news reporter make sure that he or she is presenting clearly so that the audience can understand them and also so that it is suitable to where they reporting. With broadcast journalists they can change their tone based on where they are at that moment in time, if they are for example at a football stadium then they would be expected to talk a bit louder as the atmosphere would effect the way in the journalist presents. Visual techniques in terms of attire really again depends on where the reporter is at the moment in time, for example if a reporter was in the middle of a war zone reporting back then they would not be expected to be wearing suits and ties, they would be fully equipped with armour and protection for their own safety. Also taking into consideration with hand gestures the broadcast journalist is most likely to use hand gestures to explain the atmosphere or show how much of something there is. They are also allowed to turn around or look in other directions to see what is going on for themselves to report back to the studio. An example of this would be Channel 4 news with the broadcast journalist that is Matt Freis, he was seen reporting in paris when people started to run away from what seemed to be a fire cracker set off near by, people had ran off thinking something more severe however the Freis was reluctant and stayed professional and reported everything that was going on behind him.

Magazine programme presenter

The role of a magazine show presenter vary's when it comes to visual and verbal techniques used within the show. Because magazine shows cover almost anything it is important the host/s are flexible in terms of how they use verbal and visual techniques. With verbal techniques the hosts can change this depending on the topic, if they are talking about something exciting then they would talk in a high and upbeat voice to engage viewers so that they could feel the same way on what is coming up. The hosts should also be informative and not too fast in the way they present and not too slow. The only verbal aspect that could change with topic would probably be tone and sound.  In terms of visual techniques the hosts would usually be wearing smart casual/casual clothing. If they wore smart clothing like suits and smart formal dresses all the time then they would be taken a lot more seriously by audiences, however for example a show like 'The morning show' the hosts can be humorous most if the time and very jolly so they do not have to be taken so seriously all the time. The hosts can also get up to show an example of t=something if they want to and get involved in various activities. This appeals to audiences as the show is both informative and entertaining.

Documentary Presenter

The role of a documentary presenter is to deliver information effectively and ensure the audience are engaged throughout the whole documentary. In terms of verbal techniques used they can add their own personal opinion and very rarely have some humour. They are usually slow paced and and their main priority again is to engage the viewer. They use descriptive language to explain what is on screen, this also is an advantage for the audience as it gives them expert opinions and knowledge. An example of this would be on the BBC channel where David Attenborough talks over nature and gives detail on specific things. The visual techniques that one would see would be the clothes that the host has got on, it would be appropriate to the location of the documentary so boots would be suitable for a forest, or sunglasses for the desert. The host would usually use a lot of hand gestures to explain so the audience understand how severe or how much of something there is.

DJ

The role of a DJ host is to lay music and shout out the latest hits from the charts, they can interview various people including celebrities and also have 1 on 1 challenges. In term of verbal techniques they can be very hyper and loud when they talk to again "hype" things up and liven up the mood as that is their target to the audience to make sure the audience are pleased and engaged/tuned in. The host would and could be accompanied by a second host to conversate or "banter" with to keep the show running with no awkward breaks. This increases the likability of the show so that more people would enjoy it. In some cases there can be visual techniques, the studio would be shown and the hosts can usually wear what they want but its mostly casual clothing, their face expressions are most of the time positive as thats the vibe they are trying to spread. An example of this would be 'BBC 1 Extra' They would use a lot of hand gesturers to again hype the mood up so that audiences feel more excited. This adds to the atmosphere of music and fun as thats what the radio show is all about.

Chat Show

The role of a chat show host is to entertain the audience, this can be done in many ways. Normally a chat show is mainly about celebrity gossip and interviews to get an insight on what everyone wants to hear. The host usually has a live audience in the studio therefore has to talk very loud in order for them to be heard by both the actual audience and the audience at home. They can add a lot of humour in what they say as they want to make sure the viewers are enjoying themselves. Also the hosts would not be talking formally all the time they can switch it up whenever they want. An example of this would be the 'Jimmy Fallon Show' where he interviews different celebrities on what they're up to and engages the audience by getting up to a lot of different activities. In terms of visual techniques the host would be wearing smart clothes to look classy and presentable for meeting celebrities, they'd also use a lot of facial expressions to show how they feel at that given time and represent themselves through hand gestures so that the audience can get an idea of what they're trying to say and how important it is.

Game Show

The role of a game show presenter would be to make sure the audience understand the rules of the game and how to play it also spectate or get involved by asking questions on the show. Different contestants who can be normal people or celebrities can take part (depending on the basis of the show). The host can talk in a mellow tone and explain what is going on to make it more dramatic or they can get straight into it and hype everything up to make it more exciting. An example of a game show would be 'Total Wipe Out', on this show different contestants challenge an obstacle course with a cash prize and trophy if they beat various challenges. This engages the audience as it is funny and interesting to watch. In terms of visual techniques the host would normally be wearing casual clothing as they would be outside and on an obstacle course site. They would use hand gestures and would be able to turn around to see what is going on so they can commentate on the action.
