UNIT 37 - Evaluation of Chat Show
Evaluation
When I filmed my chat show there were some difficulties I faced. One of which was setting up the equipment and getting the cameras ready with the lights. This was hard as the lights against the green screen needed to be reflected perfectly so no shadows were casted. We managed to contain this however the lights got hot quickly so we had to turn it off every now and then. Also since the script had to be changed learning the lines was a little difficult but we managed to improvise most of the script. The wires for the camera were also a difficulty as some of the cameras needed to be charged and they did get in the way so we had to be extra aware to ensure we dont trip over them. Filming most of the scenes in one take was a challenge as any verbal mistakes needed to be made perfect, making it in one take would make the chat show look more appealing and professional which was my aim. One other difficulty we faced before we actually filmed was the location we were filming in. At first we decided to film in the drama studio as it had a big space and the lighting already installed. However it was very difficult finding time slots to film in and the lights weren't working as well as I wanted them to so I had to ask our media teacher to use his room and he agreed. I was limited with space but now I could access a green screen for the background of my chat show.
An advantage was that the lighting worked well and I didn't have to adjust it a lot. it was quite easy as the chat show ran smoothly i didn't really need to keep checking, it all ran smoothly and we used our time slot efficiently. Another advantage was that the whole chat show itself was based off of the script but when it came to actually filming we used it as a back bone (brief notes) on what to talk about. This made the conversation flow easier as seen in actual chat shows where there aren't any awkward silences, this also made it easier for me to edit as I wouldn't have to keep cutting and keeping continuation up on point. Filming this was very enjoyable as it was very free flowing and enabled me to use some of my acting skills and engage with the "viewers".
Another thing that went well for me as the editing. Because i had filmed on two different cameras editing would be a task as I have never done anything like this before with two cameras. I had to since the same scene just filmed from two different angles to ensure that the continuity was on point so it would appeal to people watching at home. This is key as in real chat shows the camera doesn't just focus on one person. It goes from presenter to the guest which I had clearly shown in the final production. The editing took time as I had to download two sets of footage and then line it up accurately for the continuity to be at its best. Although it was very time consuming the editing was fun and in the end turned out pretty well in my opinion.

UNIT 37 - Prop List
Props
- Mug
Needed this because it adds some reality as most chats show hosts have a mug on their desk when presenting.
- Table
Obvious reasons. Needed a desk to present on as it was a live audience chat show.
- Chair
Would need a swivel chair as chat show hosts move around and change their position when talking to their guest.
These are the only props I needed

UNIT 37 - Weekly Production Log 3
This week I had filmed my first opening scene for the chat show, we had to set up the drama studio and make it look appealing or "suitable" for a Chat Show. This took about 30 minutes as we had difficulties finding the right props and equipment. Also we had to adjust lighting and get used to the electric lighting board so we knew how to control it. After me and Selim had finished setting up we started to shoot the opening scene of me walking in and introducing the chat show. We only got about 25 minutes of filming done as there was a drama club rehearsal at 5:00 and we started at 4:35.

UNIT 37 - weekly production Log 2
This week we had arranged to film in the drama studio and got permission from the teacher, he has gone through all the set-up work and areas we could use and how to use the lighting keyboard. We had to also arrange a time and date as the studio is very busy during school hours hence why we decided to film after school hours.

UNIT 37 - Weekly production log 1
This week as well as rehearsing we had planned to ask the drama teacher to use his room as it is very spacious and suitable for lighting. For the chat show I would have to follow the dress code convention as most chat show hosts wear a suit and tie I would have to do the same. I have chosen to use Selim as my guest as me and him are comfortable with each other on camera and can act really well.

UNIT 37 - Pitch Proposal
In my pitch I had explained all my proposals and got my ideas across to each individual, for my first option I said I would do a Chat show with one guest as I am very comfortable with that type of format as I would be using a humorous tone and be very calm with socialising. I had to explain all the props I would be using also the location of where I would be filming and the problems that I would face with this. I had included how many guests that would be on my show and why I had chosen to do so, I had given my inspiration as to why I am choosing this style of presentation.
Secondly I explained my second option which would be a Game show, In this I explained what the game would consist of and what i'd do as the host, including filling in any awkward silences with funny comment or encouragement for the contestants. I would use the assembly hall for my game show as it has a lot of space to film and it would be able to fit all my contestants in one shot as well as one camera focusing on each one individually. As every game show needs a prize i chose to do a one which would get the audience excited, for this id ask permission to use one of the teachers car to put a massive bow on it to make it look like a prize. I'd have to get consent and blur out the number plate for safety precautions of course.
Finally I had explained my last option of presentation roles and it was a lifestyle show on cooking. For this I would film at home in my kitchen or the school kitchen as it would be more spacious and have better lighting. I would have to be very descriptive in my language when doing this as the viewers would need to know what to do at different stages of the dish. I would use two cameras one to focus on the meal and one to follow me around the kitchen getting different ingredients. This is a key part as i have seen many cooking shows which do this.

UNIT 37 - Presentation Proposals
CHAT SHOW
For my presentation I will be doing a chat show. This is because I am comfortable with the structure of which the host of a chat has to follow, this will require me to be talkative and engaging with both my interviewee and the audience. This type of role requires a lot of involvement in both verbal and visual techniques. Also this involves some form of humour and this will increase the likability the show has. I think I will enjoy using this format as I am a very talkative person and i'm not shy to present emotions on camera to for example exaggerate or create humour.
For the chat show I will have to demonstrate my communication skills and show a lot of humour as in most chat shows that is what gets the audience engaged, I will also have to keep a conversation running with whoever I am interviewing and make sure that there are no awkward silences so the audience don't feel uncomfortable and don't lose interest. In some chat shows the host gets involved with a challenge the interviewee and themselves have to take part in as part of the entertainment, my chat show will include this so that the audience are more engaged and enjoy the format better. In terms of visual techniques i'd have to dress smart casual or just smart as that is what most chat show hosts wear.
For my own chat show I will be interviewing a movie star who has just finished filming a brand new film that is set to come out in the early summer of 2017. I will be interviewing the star and getting all the behind the scenes info as to how the film was set and made and also to get a little gossip going on between the two of us for more entertainment. I want to the audience to be engaged, laughing and having a good time so I will have to use a lot of techniques when talking to make them laugh. Also looking at other chat shows i have found that whenever a chat show host engages with the guest in a game, for example it makes the interview more interesting and the audience seems to enjoy it a lot more rather than just a whole hour of two people talking. I am looking to engage in a "who knows who" game with the guest. This game will be fun to play and watch as audience would be wondering whats going to happen then the reaction would be beneficial for the entertainment factor. The guest will also have the audiences/viewers attention as they'd have a story to tell and let them know about all their experiences on and off the camera. The show will only consist of one guest as most great chat shows I have watched focus on one guest at a time, this gives the audience a better chance of getting to know this specific individual. My target audience for this would be mostly 16-25+ as some of the jokes made may be more understandable my an elder audience, this can also be because the film my guest would star in would be more directed to older youths and adults so it has a clear correlation. The location for my chat show would hopefully be set somewhere where I myself can be sat behind a desk and my guest can have a chair/sofa to sit on, a clean classroom would do perfectly as both accommodate for those needs, and also a green screen to get an image of a city landscape as seen in many other chat shows. Some problems I may encounter would be it may be hard for me to find a background like that and sorting out the green screen will be difficult as well as setting it up.
An example of a chat show like this would be Jimmy Fallon who is an american chat show hosts who interview many celebrities and ask them questions on their lifestyle and what they're up to. He uses a lot of humour and asks various questions to his guests. Also what make his shows so iconic is that he gets set different tasks or challenges that he has to complete with his guests. Again his increases the popularity of the show as more and more people would enjoy watching this therefor would want to tune in and watch the show. Jimmy Fallon wears smart clothing on his show as he is dressed to impress. He also uses various hand gestures to exaggerate a certain topic and he gets up from his desk and chair to partake in activities. He can talk informally although he is dressed formal to add more humour to the show
Another example of a chat show would be the well known show 'Ellen'. Also another american chat show where the host Ellen Degeneres interviews and gets to know about her guests varying from celebrities from people who have done extraordinary things. Ellen uses different techniques to engage her audience such as asking questions to the live audience to get a general response. She has a strong connection with the celebrities she interviews for example Justin Bieber was a face that the show had gotten used to as their relationship was very strong and she had called him up to come to the show every week, this show also can include celebrity performances inside the studio and outside. Because there is so much variety on the show this is what makes it enjoyable to the audience and viewers. Ellen projects her voice loud and clear so the viewers at home as well as the live audience can hear her. She wears smart casual clothing so that she isn't too formal and so that she isn't taken too seriously.
Finally one last example of this type of format would be Jimmy Kimmels chat show. Jimmy Kimmel is well known for "taking the mick" about celebrities for fun just as a joke and he famously gets his guests to participate in various activities much like Jimmy Fallon, however he has a specific sect in his show where the celebrity guests have to read mean comments from twitter and this gains a lot of attention as it is seen as humorous. This is seen throughout the video. This is a very unique part of the show which isn't seen in any other chat show, this is what makes it unique and adds its own style on the show to make it stand out. Jimmy Kimmel speaks informally a lot of the time as he does swear in his show for humour. His clothing is smart as he wears a suit and meets A-list celebrities and it is very suitable to the occasion.
GAME SHOW
For my second choice I wanted to do a game show, this is in a way has some of the conventions of a chat show host who has to project their voice in a certain way to get the audience to react to that, be it funny or serious. I would feel comfortable doing this presentation role as I am confident in talking aloud and interacting with audiences as well as guests.
For the game show host I will have to interact a lot and make sure the rules of the game are made clear to both the contestant and the audience. As this would be the first time this game show would be on air the rules will have to be more explained in detailed compared to if the show had been going on for some time now. The audience would be kept engaged as the game could involve audience members and those at home giving their own answers to see if they themselves get it right. An example of a game show would be 'The Cube'. In this show contestants are put in a giant glass box and have to complete various tasks the cube sets them, this is all done to win a cash price. The higher the contestant goes the higher the cash prize. In my show there will be prizes awarded to contestants as it can add to the excitement for both the contestants and the audience/viewers at home. Most game show hosts have good social skills as they always have a positive relationship with the contestant. This can be seen via banter the contestant and the host have during the game show. This is vital as this will have an effect on the audience as they are seeing entertainment as well as good vibes between the the two focuses. As said before game show hosts wouldn't want any awkward silences so they'll have to fill in any gaps of silence to make things seem like they're flowing, this will be more engaging for audiences.
The idea is to keep the audience and the viewers interested throughout the show so that the entertainment is present and enjoyable. To do so a presenter of this type of show would have to make jokes with his audience and the contestants and also fill in any silences so that there isn't an awkward gap. This will be vital as viewers can lose focus.
LIFESTYLE PROGRAMME
For my third choice of presentation I would do a lifestyle programme on cooking. This would consist of me making something and then going through step by step so that viewers know what they would need if they wanted the recipe. The presenter would have to stay engaged with the viewers as s/he would need their attention throughout. The presenter would use hand gestures and the camera usually focuses on what they're cooking/preparing and then goes back to their actual face for any additional information. This type of presenter would have to be very descriptive and make sure not to leave out any vital info for the viewers to take in.
A show such as Jamie Oliver's famous 15 minute meals feature him cooking many of his quick and simple recipes for the public to try at home or just admire on the TV. He is very engaging with his audience and takes them step by step so he has their attention throughout the whole duration of the show. This show comes back with different recipes and the viewers come back to learn new things, this is a type of show that will have that effect as it can be educational for someone who wants to learn to cook, which is the general aim of the show.
For my presentation I will be doing a chat show. This is because I am comfortable with the structure of which the host of a chat has to follow, this will require me to be talkative and engaging with both my interviewee and the audience. UNIT 37 - Presentation roles and techiques
News presenter
The role of a news reporter requires them to address the audience (depending on the topic) in a modest and formal way. This is so they seem serious and are trusted with what they say and are delivering, as the main job of a news reporter is to deliver the news effectively. As the news covers mostly everything that is going on in the world from government debates to local news and even tragic events, news reporters must make sure that they are addressing the situation appropriately. For example on BBC London news the verbal techniques that would be used would ensure that the language is informative, and at a set pace so the viewers understand and receive information clearly. It is vital that the news reporter doesn't go too slow or too fast when delivering as either one can disengage audiences from watching. In terms of visual techniques the news reporters attire would be formally presentable so for instance male news reporters would most likely be wearing a suit with a tie and a female news reporter could be wearing a formal dress or a blazer and a top unbuttoned shirt. It is important that the news reporters are in formal clothes so that the audience take them seriously and it also makes them seem more reliable as they are dressed professionally. Another thing to take into consideration when it comes to visual techniques is hand gestures, the news reporter in the studio would hardly be using a lot of hand gestures whilst talking and delivering the news, this is so that the audience don't get distracted by the motion and are more focused on whats being said. Also with face expressions most of the time news reporters keep to a straight face, however this can be changed again to suit the topic. A commonly known news presenter for BBC news would be Riz Lateef. in a news report she would make sure she is dressed appropriately and formally and that her words are being heard clearly with tone to suit the specific topic.
Continuity announcer
The role of a continuity announcer would be to inform the audience on what is coming up next, they are a voiceover usually with the visual of the channels logo and the name of the programme which would be coming up next/. The verbal techniques that could be used has a wide variety as it depends on what channel it is. So for example on the channel E4 the continuity announcer could be a lot more humorous compared to a channel like BBC. They usually make remarks on shows and usually quote a saying from it. The announcer would make sure he says what is coming up next in a up bet and tempo sort of tone as it would be "hyping" up the show that is coming up so viewers would be more likely to watch it, if they were to announce the next show in a dull and mellow voice then it wouldn't seem as appealing to the viewers and they'd most likely change the channel, therefore it is vital that the announcer is informative as well as engaging. As the format of this role is a voice over there are no visual techniques used.
Broadcast Journalist
The role of a broadcast journalist is to go to certain places on the "field" and report back to the studio so that audiences can get more information in more depth with a rough visual idea. For this role to be successful then the the reporter would have to have certain flexibility in terms of how they address an audience through verbal and visual techniques. The field reporter would also like the news reporter make sure that he or she is presenting clearly so that the audience can understand them and also so that it is suitable to where they reporting. With broadcast journalists they can change their tone based on where they are at that moment in time, if they are for example at a football stadium then they would be expected to talk a bit louder as the atmosphere would effect the way in the journalist presents. Visual techniques in terms of attire really again depends on where the reporter is at the moment in time, for example if a reporter was in the middle of a war zone reporting back then they would not be expected to be wearing suits and ties, they would be fully equipped with armour and protection for their own safety. Also taking into consideration with hand gestures the broadcast journalist is most likely to use hand gestures to explain the atmosphere or show how much of something there is. They are also allowed to turn around or look in other directions to see what is going on for themselves to report back to the studio. An example of this would be Channel 4 news with the broadcast journalist that is Matt Freis, he was seen reporting in paris when people started to run away from what seemed to be a fire cracker set off near by, people had ran off thinking something more severe however the Freis was reluctant and stayed professional and reported everything that was going on behind him.
Magazine programme presenter
The role of a magazine show presenter vary's when it comes to visual and verbal techniques used within the show. Because magazine shows cover almost anything it is important the host/s are flexible in terms of how they use verbal and visual techniques. With verbal techniques the hosts can change this depending on the topic, if they are talking about something exciting then they would talk in a high and upbeat voice to engage viewers so that they could feel the same way on what is coming up. The hosts should also be informative and not too fast in the way they present and not too slow. The only verbal aspect that could change with topic would probably be tone and sound. In terms of visual techniques the hosts would usually be wearing smart casual/casual clothing. If they wore smart clothing like suits and smart formal dresses all the time then they would be taken a lot more seriously by audiences, however for example a show like 'The morning show' the hosts can be humorous most if the time and very jolly so they do not have to be taken so seriously all the time. The hosts can also get up to show an example of t=something if they want to and get involved in various activities. This appeals to audiences as the show is both informative and entertaining.
Documentary Presenter
The role of a documentary presenter is to deliver information effectively and ensure the audience are engaged throughout the whole documentary. In terms of verbal techniques used they can add their own personal opinion and very rarely have some humour. They are usually slow paced and and their main priority again is to engage the viewer. They use descriptive language to explain what is on screen, this also is an advantage for the audience as it gives them expert opinions and knowledge. An example of this would be on the BBC channel where David Attenborough talks over nature and gives detail on specific things. The visual techniques that one would see would be the clothes that the host has got on, it would be appropriate to the location of the documentary so boots would be suitable for a forest, or sunglasses for the desert. The host would usually use a lot of hand gestures to explain so the audience understand how severe or how much of something there is.
DJ
The role of a DJ host is to lay music and shout out the latest hits from the charts, they can interview various people including celebrities and also have 1 on 1 challenges. In term of verbal techniques they can be very hyper and loud when they talk to again "hype" things up and liven up the mood as that is their target to the audience to make sure the audience are pleased and engaged/tuned in. The host would and could be accompanied by a second host to conversate or "banter" with to keep the show running with no awkward breaks. This increases the likability of the show so that more people would enjoy it. In some cases there can be visual techniques, the studio would be shown and the hosts can usually wear what they want but its mostly casual clothing, their face expressions are most of the time positive as thats the vibe they are trying to spread. An example of this would be 'BBC 1 Extra' They would use a lot of hand gesturers to again hype the mood up so that audiences feel more excited. This adds to the atmosphere of music and fun as thats what the radio show is all about.
Chat Show
The role of a chat show host is to entertain the audience, this can be done in many ways. Normally a chat show is mainly about celebrity gossip and interviews to get an insight on what everyone wants to hear. The host usually has a live audience in the studio therefore has to talk very loud in order for them to be heard by both the actual audience and the audience at home. They can add a lot of humour in what they say as they want to make sure the viewers are enjoying themselves. Also the hosts would not be talking formally all the time they can switch it up whenever they want. An example of this would be the 'Jimmy Fallon Show' where he interviews different celebrities on what they're up to and engages the audience by getting up to a lot of different activities. In terms of visual techniques the host would be wearing smart clothes to look classy and presentable for meeting celebrities, they'd also use a lot of facial expressions to show how they feel at that given time and represent themselves through hand gestures so that the audience can get an idea of what they're trying to say and how important it is.
Game Show
The role of a game show presenter would be to make sure the audience understand the rules of the game and how to play it also spectate or get involved by asking questions on the show. Different contestants who can be normal people or celebrities can take part (depending on the basis of the show). The host can talk in a mellow tone and explain what is going on to make it more dramatic or they can get straight into it and hype everything up to make it more exciting. An example of a game show would be 'Total Wipe Out', on this show different contestants challenge an obstacle course with a cash prize and trophy if they beat various challenges. This engages the audience as it is funny and interesting to watch. In terms of visual techniques the host would normally be wearing casual clothing as they would be outside and on an obstacle course site. They would use hand gestures and would be able to turn around to see what is going on so they can commentate on the action.
